Back to the Books: Set for Success

Posted: 08/28/08
Their pencils are sharpened and their bags are packed...Your kids are all set for school to start.

Student
"I usually get a good night's sleep and eat breakfast."

But it's not just kids who need to be ready for the big day back...It's parents too.

Andrea Twardzicki, teacher at Andrews Middle School
"Teachers really want to communicate with the parent."

Laurie Wasserman, teacher at Andrews Middle School
"We really need your help."

Lesson number one: It's okay to let your kids struggle with their homework.

Andrea Twardzicki, teacher at Andrews Middle School
"If the parent helps too much, I don't necessarily know that the child is struggling and it's going to just keep getting worse and worse. So I think it's important for parents to know the limit."

Lesson two: Stay positive about school.

Laurie Wasserman, teacher at Andrews Middle School
"Be supportive of us. Please don't share your feelings of anger about a grade with your child because they may come into class and say, ‘my mother said I don't have to do your homework because you're a bad teacher,' and that's it for us."

Lesson number three: Always keep your child's teacher in the loop with what's going on at home.

Laurie Wasserman, teacher at Andrews Middle School
"If a family pet is sick, if there's an illness, or a beloved grandparent is in the hospital...That can affect how their children are in school good or not so good, and everything you tell us by law is confidential."

So that way when it's time to get back to the books, parents and kids will be set for success.
