The Buzz: Winona Ryder Arrested

Winona Ryder who won acclaim for her roles in Little Women and The Age of Innocence was arrested Wednesday night and charged with shoplifting and illegal possession of prescription drugs.

It's an appearance on video she'd rather forget. Actress Winona Ryder allegedly caught shoplifting almost $5,000 worth of merchandise, everything from clothing to hair accessories at Saks Fifth Avenue in Beverly Hills.

Lt. Gary Gilmond, Beverly Hills Police Dept.
"The security officers observed both digitally and by video, Ms. Ryder to remove sensor-matic tags, which are the security tags affixed to the clothing items, and place the items in a bag that she had. And she observed to leave the store without paying for the items."

The 30-year-old actress was booked on felony charges of grand theft and possession of pharmaceutical drugs with out a prescription, reportedly pain killers. But officers said she was not under the influence at the time of her arrest, and was released on $20,000 bail.

Attorney Mark Geragos
"It will become clear that she did not take anything, that there was not theft here. Ms. Ryder has absolutely at no time had any intent to deprive anyone of any property without paying for it."

Over the years, the actress has been no stranger to the spotlight but admits having sought treatment in the past for depression. Ryder is scheduled to be in court on January 11th, but her attorney says he's confident, all charges will be dismissed.
