Many people no longer wear contacts or glasses thanks to LASIK surgery. If you're thinking about having the procedure done, you should know about some new laser technology that is making the procedure safer and more effective.

Ramesh feels like a prisoner to his glasses and contacts, having worn them for most of his life.

"They just irritate your eyes," Ramesh said.

Frustrated, Ramesh has now opted for IntraLase LASIK surgery. It's the latest in LASIK technology.

"What it does, is in essence gives us an ability to perform an exact flap," eye surgeon Dr. Joseph Dello Russo said. "We can make, we determine what dimensions of the flap you want and it comes out perfect every time."

In LASIK surgery the surgeon uses a hand held surgical blade to make a thin corneal flap.

With IntraLase LASIK surgery the blade is replaced with a computer-guided laser.

The doctor can program the laser to include the exact flap diameter, depth and width.

"I have done about 15,000 in the last, a little over three years and the visual outcomes are far better, much better than the blade. The blade is kind of crude," Dr. Russo said.

Ramesh said he couldn't wait to escape his dependence on glasses and contacts.

"It gives you freedom, you don't have to worry about it, that's what I am really looking forward to," Ramesh said.

Dr. Russo said that his patients have had fewer complications and better vision with IntraLase LASIK then with traditional LASIK surgery.
