Schilling, Flutie stump for GOP Senate candidate

WORCESTER, Mass. -- Republican Senatorial candidate on Sunday Scott Brown got support from Boston sports heroes on Sunday.
As President Obama stumped for Brown's rival, Democrat Martha Coakley, at Northeastern University, former Boston Red Sox pitcher Curt Schilling and former Boston College and NFL quarterback Doug Flutie attended the Republican's rally in Worcester Sunday.
Schilling brought up how Coakley mistakenly called him a Yankee fan.
“It’s not really that big of a deal, but again, I think it’s just another sign of her aloofness or just the fact that she’s very out of touch with the people,” said Schilling.
Brown said he is happy to stock his rally with local popular figures instead of prominent politicians.
“They are great people, and they’re local legends. I’m proud to have their support,” said Brown.
He added that the President, who was known for his positive campaign, should talk to Coakley about the negative tone hers has taken on recently.
“It’s past negative. It’s malicious. Shame on Martha,” said Brown.
Brown’s daughter and former “American Idol” contestant Ayla Brown rushed over to the rally after her Boston College basketball game and belted out part of Aretha Franklin’s “Respect.”
“If there’s anything I know, it’s that an underdog can accomplish great things,” added Ayla Brown.
Her father also made stops Sunday in Holyoke and Wachusett Mountain, where he joined former Republican Governor Paul Cellucci.
Brown will campaign closer to home in Boston on Monday. He also plans to shake hands with locals outside the Boston Bruins hockey game at TD Garden.
Coakley once said she would rather not shake hands outside in the cold by Fenway Park.
