U.S. House District 3: Tom Weaver on the issues
On the Web
Our country is in deep trouble.....This election is about one issue.... Who will be in control ..the Government or the people? Who will you support - Those who believe that bureaucrats in Washington have all the answers which leads to total Government control? Or those who believe in the principals and values that made this country great and believe in giving the people control at the local level?
I believe in those principles and values: local government control, fiscal constraint and individual responsible freedom. We have seen what government solutions and control have produced – a staggering debt, out-of-control spending and a massive expansion of un-elected bureaucracies.
As a result of government solutions since LBJ, we are faced with a second major issue. Are we going to elect candidates that believe we can tinker around the edges of the debt or are we going to elect candidates that believe in drastic spending cuts that will hurt? I believe that tinkering will result in the death of this Nation. We know it, even if we do not want to admit it. We do not want our grandchildren to be smothered with our excesses?
I believe in local control and I believe that we need to make drastic cuts in order to restore the greatness of this country. Please understand, given the existing tax revenue of $2.5T, only entitlements, pensions and interest on the debt can be funded. Government and defense spending produce a $1.5T annual deficit.
CUT NOW, SPEND LATER…
Private Job Creation: Additional revenue is required to meet spending demands and pay down the debt. We can either take it from the rich or we can create a pro-business atmosphere that creates jobs; jobs that produce taxes. I have created jobs. Government spending, government taxes and government bureaucracy do not create jobs in the private sector -- they KILL jobs. The private sector needs to be left alone. Freeze the taxes, lower the corporate tax rate and most importantly, decrease the size of the un-elected bureaucracies. When these agencies are reduced – regulations, rules and laws are reduced. Business leaders know how to grow businesses, they know how to create jobs – they need certainty in the outlook of the future.
Government Reduction: The overall size of the un-elected bureaucracies must be reduced – with a 20% across the board cut. Some agencies must be closed, with the power returned to the States. The Department of Education and much of the EPA falls into this category. And government pensions must be changed to contributory, not guaranteed. Serving the people is a privilege.
Entitlements: The third rail of politics. If someone does not step on the rail, we will lose this Nation. First, no benefits should be paid to those that have not contributed. Second, the programs need to revert to the original intent. As an example, social security was for the elderly, not the disabled. If we need a program to help the disabled achieve economic independence, then we need to create that program.
Our Children's Future: We know that the youth of this country will NEVER receive any of the Entitlements – then we need to change that, while protecting those that have no option. Congress must retake the power that it has given the un-elected bureaucracies and stop this explosion of spending. How many of us take out credit cards, run the charges to the maximum – and then bequest that debt to our children?
Protect the Environment while Producing More Energy: In order to achieve economic expansion, the nation needs more reliable energy; it is the lifeblood of the economy. We need an all-of-the-above attitude, without subsidies to large corporations. We must become energy independent. Since the Department of Energy has failed in its mandate, it needs to be abolished, allowing the private sector to achieve independence. Let’s not forget the environment. Common sense dictates that valuable waste is collected – not discharged. There is a difference between good regulation and harmful regulation that is based on poor science and ultimately punishes success.
National Defense: One of the major responsibilities of the federal government is the protection of our country. This applies to our interests, our oceans and our borders. I served as an Officer in the US Navy. I understand the commitment of our all-volunteer armed forces, and the need to support them. We need clear and concise rules of engagement that allow our troops to win when deployed in a conflict and return home. Our borders must be secured. I believes that immigration is a national treasure, offering citizenship in return for hard working and legal immigrants who wish to take an oath to defend and protect.
