Pakistan lodges protest with India over detention of embassy driver in New Delhi

ISLAMABAD, Pakistan -- Pakistan lodged a strong protest with neighboring India on Saturday for detaining a driver for the Pakistan embassy in New Delhi.

The Foreign Ministry accused India of illegally detaining and "manhandling" Mohammad Farooq, who was held briefly by security forces in New Delhi on Friday.

The statement did not say why he was detained but said the "harassment" was a violation of "international conventions as well as diplomatic norms."

Indian officials could not immediately be reached for comment.

The protest came as India arrested a military officer in New Delhi on suspicions he was spying for Pakistan, Indian news reports said Saturday.

Anil Kumar, a corporal in the Indian army, allegedly was intercepted handing over documents to a Pakistan embassy official, Press Trust of India said, citing police.

A few weeks ago, the countries expelled each other's diplomats amid allegations of spying.

Pakistan and India have a history of bitter relations and have fought three wars since gaining independence from Britain in 1947, two of which have been over the Himalayan region of Kashmir.

They are scheduled to resume peace talks Nov. 14.
